COMMENTARY
What is the essential feature of the Newness of Life that
Christians walk in? It is a life that is characterized by the fact that
we are Dead to Sin! It is a life that is characterized by an absence of
sin! This is what this passage is teaching & it agrees with a vast
amount of Scripture; Psalm 1 / 1John 3.. & many
others, as well as the rest of Romans 6.
Being made righteous & being delivered from sin, set free from sin,
are the effects of the Power of God in the Gospel working in the
Christian. Therefore people who say they cannot stop sinning
& identify with the man in Romans 7:14-25 are in denial of the
Christian Gospel. And people who deny the Gospel cannot be regenerate!
The Christian Gospel is the Power of God unto Salvation which sets men
Free from their sin. Romans six is an exposition of that very theme.
But people who continue to sin cannot have any claim that they have
been set Free from their sin. They are still in Bondage to their sin,
which is exactly what the passage in Romans 7:14ff is describing; a man
who is still in Bondage to his sin and is trying to find acceptance
with God through the law.. which is an impossibility. Therefore people
who say they are just like the man in Romans 7:14ff are saying that
they are Unregenerate. and people who say that man was a Christian are
rejecting the Christian Gospel.
People who reject the Gospel are not Christians!
