COMMENTARY
This and the following verses settle the whole "grace\law"
controversy. There is really nothing complicated about it at all. It
may be reduced to 2 points;
1. The believer is not under the law. vs 14.
2. The believer is not to sin. whole chapter.
The real problem arises from the fact that folks try to fit
God’s doctrines into their understanding in nice neat little
packages. This cannot be done, nor is it necessary to understand the
things of God completely in order to live the Christian life. Can
anyone understand the Trinity, or the Deity of Christ or His Atonement
for all the sins of His people for all time? Yet this does not hinder
us from living a life that is pleasing to God. As an illustration,
consider a do-it-yourself piano kit. It consists of 300,000 parts &
pieces that you must put together. Directions are included. One
does not need to understand why a certain piece or part goes together
with another part. All you have to do is put the parts together
according to the directions and you will end up, hopefully, with a
piano. So too, in the Christian
life we only need to know that we are no longer under the law, and will
never be condemned by it and that we must avoid sin at all costs!
Operate according to these directives and you will be on good ground,
whether you understand them or not.
Further, these vss blast to smithereens any false notion that a
person can "believe on Jesus" and continue to live in sin and end up in
heaven. To teach that is to deny this and other passages of Scripture
that are most clear on the matter; e.g. Romans 8:1-15 and the book of 1
John. Rather, the true believer is called to a life of obedience unto
righteousness and holiness and the end eternal life.
