COMMENTARY
Here Paul says that propitiation is the declaration or the showing
forth, or demonstration of the righteousness of God. And in chapter 1
Paul says that the Gospel is the revelation of the righteousness of
God. Therefore, propitiation is the declaration of the Gospel. The
declaration of the righteousness of God through faith is inseparably
bound up in Christ’s activity of propitiation. Therefore,
propitiation is central to the Gospel. On this basis we see that 1John
2:2 is a declaration of the Gospel and anybody who says Christ
propitiated for people other than the elect has denied the Gospel and
is not a Christian.
Propitiation is the basis upon which the declaration of the
righteousness of God by faith is found. But the righteousness of God
received by faith is how men are saved. Therefore, the propitiatory
sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sins of His people is the basis of
the Gospel. It was a declaration or demonstration of the righteousness
of God. And Paul says anyone who is ignorant of or not submitted to
that righteousness is lost...Rom 10:1-4.
