COMMENTARY
Melchizedek cannot be the Son of God as some might suppose for
Christ sprang from the tribe of Judah whereas Melchizedek sprang from
no tribe! There were no tribes during Melchizedek’s life. vss 5
& 6
Since the priesthood was established in Aaron & his
descendants who were of the tribe of Levi and only his descendants
could be legal priests, vss 5, 6, Melchizedek would be out of line and
clash with the true OT priesthood. IOW once the Aaronic priesthood was
established Melchizedek would have then become an -Illegal- priest! And
so, to "abide continually" cannot apply to Melchizedek. It cannot mean
that Melchizedek was the Son of God, otherwise the Son of God was an
illegal priest as long as the Aaronic, Levitical Priesthood was in
force. So what then does "abide continually" mean? It can only mean
that the True Priest, who is the Lord Jesus Christ, "abides
continually". In other words, with regard to Melchizedek it can only be
typical whereas it is fulfilled in and applicable to Christ in the
fullness of its meaning. It cannot mean that Melchizedek was the Son of
God!
It may help to keep in mind that OT terminology seldom means the same
thing in the NT. For example; the physical nation of Israel was
God’s ’chosen’ and ‘redeemed’ people. Yet
this cannot mean the same thing as the NT usage.. to be chosen and
redeemed unto salvation because most of the Israelites were lost and
perished in their sin! So when it is said of Melchizedek that he
"abides continually" it cannot have an eternal connotation, otherwise
where is he now? Are there then 2 priests that "abide continually?"
This can only be understood as applying to the Lord Jesus Christ who
does indeed "abide continually" and to no other for God shares His
glory with -No- one.
