COMMENTARY
Themes of the book;
1. The main theme of Hebrews is the contrast between the Old Economy
and the New; The Old Covenant and the New; Moses & the Lord Jesus
Christ. The first was temporal and inferior and is done away; while the second is
far superior and is eternal.
Just as Moses and the Lord Jesus Christ are not the same two
persons, so too, the Old Covenant and the New are not the same two
Covenants. The Scriptures present to us two entirely different
Covenants that are separate and distinct from each other. This theme is
found throughout the Scriptures and is most notable in the New
Testament in such places as 2 Cor 3:6 - 18 and Galatians 4:21 - 31.
One verse from Galatians clearly proves the truth that the
Scriptures speak of two separate Covenants;
Gal 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two
covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which genders to bondage,
which is Agar.
Read the verse and ask the question; How many covenants?
Your answer;...
Not by bread alone but by... Every word. That includes the
word "two" in this verse. So... How many covenants? Any answer
-other than- two is a denial of the word of God. The notion that there
is but ~One~ covenant with two "administrations" is not found anywhere
in the entire Bible. Therefore it is false doctrine. That means that Covenant Theology is built on a false platform that claims that
there is but ~One~ covenant with two "administrations". That means that
the entire structure of Covenant Theology is built on a false platform
that doesn't exist, except in the minds of those who hold to it. That
means that Covenant Theology is a false doctrine.
In a recent survey the question was asked; Is Covenant Theology Biblical. See the response here.
2. Perseverance. Another underlying theme of the
book is the exhortation to believers to keep on going in the Christian
faith and not to shrink back. One sample verse;
3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are
we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm
unto the end.
Why was the writer so concerned with the necessity to exhort
believers to continue in the faith, especially since Scripture teaches
that once a person is saved he cannot lose his salvation so why all the
warnings against apostasy? A similar question may be asked in relation
to salvation itself. Paul instructs Christians to 'work out their
salvation with fear & trembling' [Php 2:12]. But why would such an
exhortation be necessary if you can't lose your salvation?
Your answer....?
