COMMENTARY
This verse means exactly what it says... on the sabbath
everybody must STAY HOME! Anybody who goes out of his house has broken
the sabbath and should be put to death. This is what sabbatarians must
contend with.
Also... the sabbath was given to Israel not the Gentiles! This
means that there was no sabbath before God gave it to Israel. If, as
Covenant Theologians claim, the sabbath was given in Genesis and was
for all men everywhere then why does God now -give- it to Israel?
Weren't they included in "all men everywhere"?..
Objection; The sabbath was so given in Genesis 2:2,3 when it says God
-rested-. The Hebrew word for rest is -shabath- & is the verb
form of the noun which means... sabbath. So seee-e-e! The sabbath
-was- given in Genesis!
Answer; Like I already said, even if one could establish the sabbath in
Genesis it still doesn't matter because the sabbath was completely
~Abolished~ in the NT. Moreover, a reference to God "resting" to prove
the sabbath proves too much for you see... God is still resting from
all His works of creation, which is what that is referring to.
Therefore that "sabbath" hasn't ended yet and no one knows when it
will end. But the sabbaths given by God to Israel all begin and end
within a 24 hour period of time. So the two are not the same thing.
Furthermore, even tho the word for "rest" is the verb form of the word
for sabbath, it is only translated 'sabbath' one time in the OT. So
Genesis 2:2,3 is too flimsy to build a case on. But again, even if the
case were established, the sabbath has -still- been done away in the NT.
