                                           COMMENTARY

Folks...  A ~Witness~ is necessarily a living person, not some inanimate force! Therefore this verse testifies to the Personality of the Holy Spirit.

Now... this along with many other passages teaches us that obedience is indispensable to salvation. That is to say... if a person who claims to be saved is not walking in obedience, then, according to the word of God such a person is a liar and the truth is not in him. That means he’s lost! See 1John 2:4. As true as it is that one is not saved by his obedience.. because that would be a works salvation which is another, false gospel, yet it is also true that one is not saved -apart from- obedience. The signature verse is Rom 6:17. That verse is a description of what happens in a person’s life when he gets saved and centers around the element of obedience. Before one is saved one is walking in -disobedience-. After one is saved he now walks in obedience and keeps the commandments.

Eze 36:27  And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep mine ordinances, and do them.  see context.

Luke 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6  And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

See also Psalm 119. Here's the first 3 verses...
1 ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.
2  Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
3  They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.

A Christian is one who walks in the law of the LORD, keeps His testimonies and does not sin! In other words, he walks in obedience to the will of God as it is revealed in the Scriptures. If he does not then he has no legitimate Biblical claim to being saved. He might "feel" saved; he might "feel" his sins are forgiven; he might "feel" he is confessing Christ... but his feelings are deceiving. According to the testimony of God in the Scriptures he is still lost!

Do you know someone who claims "Jesus" but is walking in disobedience? If so then you have every right, and even a duty to approach that person and confront him with his sin. Go look up the words "obey" and "obedience" in the NT. You will have more-than-enough Biblical testimony to confront such people and exhort them to repent. If they do not then they have no Biblical grounds to claim they are saved. They are on extremely dangerous ground because if they die... they perish!
