COMMENTARY
There is -No Way- you can get "State" from this
verse. This verse is an exhortation to -do- something i.e. to be
engaged in the activity of purifying oneself. That’s a direct
exhortation to one’s Conduct! Not his "state". The only way a
natural born totally depraved sinner can identify and comply with this
verse is if God, by His power in the Gospel changes his Character;
and that is exactly what Regeneration is folks.
Gill waxes most radical by saying that complete freedom from sin
is not only not attainable in this life but in the next as well!
Here's the quote;
"but then this "as" is only expressive of some degree of likeness and
similitude, and not perfect equality, which is not to be expected in
this, or in the world to come;"
Now, no one denies that we will never be "equal" to Christ in all
aspects, including His Deity, if that's what Gill meant. But we most
certainly will be equal to Him in Righteousness. Otherwise, no entrance
into Heaven for no unclean thing shall enter there.
1John
